After a self-imposed hiatus to travel the world, "Flashpoint" star Amy Jo Johnson tells CTV.ca that she's ready to return to television.
"It felt like this would be the right time to work again," says Johnson.
"I took two years off because I really wanted a family and I was tired of the L.A. scene."
On "Flashpoint," Johnson plays Julianna "Jules" Callaghan, a sniper and rappelling expert for the Strategic Response Unit (based on Toronto's real-life Emergency Task Force).
Airing on Fridays at 10 p.m. ET on CTV and CBS, the Canadian series debuted last week as the No. 1 show in both Canada and the U.S. in its timeslot.
The series also stars Enrico Colantoni, Hugh Dillon and David Paetkau.
Already four months pregnant, Johnson plans on finishing all 13 episodes of the first season of "Flashpoint" before giving birth to her first child - a task the actress admits won't be easy.
"It has been the most physical role I've ever done, and on top of that - being pregnant - it has been incredibly challenging," says Johnson.
"But everybody is really supportive and so it's been fulfilling and fun. I'm getting into a rhythm now and so I have more energy. It's good."
Originally known as Kimberly Hart on the "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers," Johnson has also enjoyed guest starring roles on "ER" and "Spin City."
Johnson last appeared in 2006 co-starring in the TV movie "Magma: Volcanic Disaster" and on the series "What About Brian?"
Now that production of "Flashpoint" is underway, the actress admits that she had to overcome one of her biggest fears in order to get her role right.
"I used to have a phobia of guns. Five years ago, a friend took me to a shooting range and I hated it. I was petrified. But my phobia is gone now - I got to shoot a gun yesterday, it was fun!"
Johnson will also be putting her musical talents to use on "Flashpoint" when one of her songs, "Dancing In-Between" will be played at the end of the episode called "Attention Shopper."
The song originally appeared on her CD "imperfect," released in 2005. A new version of "Dancing In-Between," recorded in Bosnia, will air on "Flashpoint."
Johnson says she has a simple approach when it comes to her music career.
"I've never really pursued music as a way to make a living, or be a rock star - I just love doing it. It's different than acting, and acting is how I make a living."
"Flashpoint" airs Fridays and Sundays on CTV and CBS at 10 p.m. ET. Full episodes are also available on the CTV Video Player.
